Starting out

For this class, I'll have to create animations that I'd be able to use in my portfolio. Eventually I'd be creating several cycling animations that would be able to be used in a game setting. All of my experiences animating before were unsuccessful, but after going through the 12 principles of animation I feel as if I have a better eye for things. I had always wanted to be able to take a character throughout the whole character art pipeline, as I can do concept, sculpt, and rigging. I hope that after this class I'll be able to be more confident doing animations as well.

Practice

To start out, I did this beach ball vs wall practice. This animation is stepped and the takeaway was how to animate smears. This animation also showed antic, ease in and ease out, and a bit of timing. Timing is something I still have to work on but I think I understand smears and squash and stretch very well. I feel like this animation was successful.

With this animation the point was to demonstrate drag and secondary action. I think my timing on this one was a little off but I think I was able to show drag well. If I were to redo this animation, I'd have more antic on the UFO starting to move and give the animation more time to play out.

I did this animation quickly but I think it ended up being one of my favorites. The point was to use exaggeration to really sell a movement. It was very fun to do and I think I did this one very successfully, I think the only thing wrong with it is timing. I think I would try to do more with ease in and ease out if I were to redo this one.

This exercise was about showing character through poses. We were supposed to show that this rig was Spider-man just through that alone. I really enjoyed this one, I had a lot of fun messing with the rig and making the poses exaggerated. I realize I really like exaggeration and I'll probably want to use that in my final animation.

Next Steps

In my final animations I want to make use of exaggeration as I enjoy working with that. I really need to improve on my timing, I have strong poses but I tend to ignore inbetweens and timing.
